A Day Without Music

I wake to sounds of the crows. They're lingering on the boughs of the evergreens, catching up on idle chatter not far from my bedroom. Sunlight streams in, draping itself over the pile of washed clothes which I swear will start thinking for itself soon if I don't clean it up.

The shower flicks on with a hiss and water drowns out the sound of the birds. Showers probably shouldn't hiss. I should get that fixed soon.

Heading to work, I restrained my urge to listen to music. I listen to music every day, I'm afraid that too much will dull the experience. I tuck the headphones back in my pocket and the bus roars off down the street, whistling as the combustion engine nears it's twentieth birthday. They'll retire these ones soon I suppose.

The office is quiet when I walk in. Only two other bleary eyed co-workers are there, plopping their backpacks down at the desks where we'll sit for the next eight hours. They smile, wave, and 'good morning' me, I do the same, and porcelain clinks in the kitchen. Three co-workers then.

I go to get some coffee, the shipyard nearby generates a thunderous rumbling as crates are offloaded from ships just docked, the gulls wheel listlessly above and call in that strange North American way; it's not a reverberative caw, it's more of a smooth, high-pitched yell. They're silenced as the door behind me closes and the barista works his magic, the coffee machine hissing in happy conformance. Coffee is hot this morning.

The office is buzzing when I return, and the day flies by as I'm focused on picking a certain shade of blue, and shifting that arm by a few pixels.

It's almost time to leave, I plug my external hard drive in and find that my music library is gone.

Ouch.

Unplugging it again, I head home. The distant grumble of traffic feels like its almost six o'clock and the neighbourhood slips into shadow. Junkies and homeless kids start filtering out into the streets from god knows where. As I near the library they get louder, catching up on idle chatter not far from my bus stop.

The house is silent when I walk in. My keys remind me of tiny cymbals as they hit the bench-top. I sit down to try and fix my music library.

Very nicely written. If I'd written the same events it would've just been: Argh! My damn music player broke! (Probably a good thing I don't blog.)

If it's your iPod that's causing you trouble, I know a website that's having a comp to give one away. Although I think for some reason it's being called an Earmuff giveaway... Odd. ;)

You did make music with your words, James...and you also used them like brushstrokes to a canvas. I've mentioned it before--you have a wonderful talent for imagery! :)

woaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh ipod giveaway!!!!!!!

I expect the same odds as everyone else, EVEN THOUGH, I am your sister...

hmm. On second thoughts I feel bad, so I retract my earlier statement... And expect far better odds than anyone else. teehee.

haha, kiddingggggg! I have a perfectly lovely ipod already and another (especially one of such garish colouring) would simply mean creating and sorting a whole lot of playlists for a whole lot of moods (and believe me, I have a lot of those) and would just take FOREVER!!!

... consequently, do you think that pink spray paint would damage my current ipod?
hahahaha.
(No but seriously if it's a pink one you've got - it's mine. )

Ok. That's enough of that now.
Can't believe you didn't tell me about the CBC related news... If I were your only sister and had to hear it from a friend at coffee today, I'd be TOTALLY pissed! hahaaaaaa -
wait...

Also, nice writing in this post :) felt like I was right there with you. mmmmmm :)
And I probably will be if I don't get a job in the next couple of days because Phil is going to kick me out! oops.

So get onto facebook and email me with the details of whats going on once and a while (by which I mean immediately), or I'll just keep harassing you with email sized posts here, and eeevvvveryone will suffer. Spare the others James :)

Love you to the moon and back,
miss you,

(ps, I also have something called a 'mobile phone'. It's a great little thing that allows you to just write whatever you want to someone, however trivial, and then they can write you back, just like that! woah. that crazy technology these days.)

You are a master of words. You not only make them behave, but excel. I really appreciate this kind of writing.

And I'm sorry that your competition is developing such a bizarre cult name. I can't help but feel somewhat responsible. :P

JAMIIIIIIIEEEE!!! For the record, I'm not just writing because I want to win an ipod, I did actually read your blog thingy and YAY! for you, well done I'm so proud of youuuu!!!!!! :D Now that I actually know the website, I can read it regularly, ehee. Snazzy home page too, very nice.

Anyway, I think your sister wrote enough for the both of us, really (because we'd probably be saying the same things, we tend to do that a bit). BUT well done again! Missing you and hope that canada is not too cold for you! (It's getting really warm here:) )

I'll write again soon:)
